Cupcakes By Any Other Name…

Taste Just As Sweet!

Yesterday, via Facebook, I had the pleasure of talking to my husband’s cousin who lives in Italy. I don’t speak Italian and he doesn’t speak English but through the magic of the Google Translator we were able to make ourselves understood.

Anyway, it got me wondering how to say cupcakes in Italian and guess what? There was no translation for the word cupcake available in Italian. Either the translator wasn’t working properly, or the way to say cupcakes in Italian is simply “cupcakes”.

I looked up the word cupcake in several other languages and this is what I found:

Spanish: magdalena
Russian: kekc
Dutch: koekje

And that’s just about all I could find. Most of the other languages don’t have a translated word for cupcakes. I tried it in French, Greek, German, etc., etc. etc. Either they aren’t called cupcakes overseas, they go by a completely different name, or {gasp} they don’t bake cupcakes around the world!
